What is STRESS?

If you are alive you've got stress. To be honest most of us “stress about” money, work, relationships and health to some extent on a daily basis. We accept that life is stressful and it is better to get used to it because there is not much to do about it.

But have you ever asked what exactly is stress and what can you really do about it?

It is not easy to define what exactly stress and I certainly don't want to bore you with long explanations so for simplicity's sake let's just say:

“Stress is the rate of wear and tear on the body”

“Stress is a response given to a real or percieved threat”

The stress response

When you are under stress (physical, mental or emotional threat) you automatically go into a “fight-or-flight” response.

This is a survival mechanism, enabling you to react quickly to life-threatening situations. This is very useful on the short term because it helps you to cope with difficult situations.

However chronic stress can cause a variety of symptoms and greatly affect your overall health and well-being. In other words it takes a toll on your body and on your life.

Did you know?

  • 75% of Americans are experiencing moderate to high levels of stress on a daily basis

  • 43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress.

  • 75% to 90% of all doctor's office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints

The effects of long term (chronic) stress

  • Higher risk of having a stroke or heart attack

  • Increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes

  • Stress might cause nausea, vomiting, stomachache, diarrhea and constipation

  • If you’re constantly under stress, your muscles don’t get the chance to relax. Tight muscles cause headaches, back and shoulder pain, and body aches

  • For women, chronic stress can cause irregular or no menstruation, in some cases heavier and more painful periods. The physical symptoms of menopause may also be magnified under long term stress

  • For men stress can cause erectile dysfunction and impotence

  • Long term stress compromises your immune system and increase inflammatory response to foreign invaders
